TUCSON, Ariz., March 1, 2005 — Through St. Patrick’s Day, millions of Americans will “paint the town green” by participating in the Muscular Dystrophy Association’s
Shamrocks Against Dystrophy program. The popular MDA tradition, led by internationally renowned singer Maureen McGovern, runs through March 17.
Patrons of thousands of businesses nationwide, including supermarkets, convenience stores, restaurants and other retailers, are supporting the fight against
neuromuscular
diseases
by buying and signing $1 and $5 Shamrock mobiles to hang in the business locations.
In 2004, Shamrocks Against Dystrophy, the nation’s largest charitable campaign associated with St. Patrick’s Day, raised more than $12 million through the
efforts of volunteers, participating businesses and sponsors.
For the fifth year, McGovern, a member of MDA’s Board of Directors and a favorite performer on the Jerry Lewis MDA
Telethon,
is serving as the chairperson of Shamrocks Against Dystrophy.
“I understand the value of this special MDA program,” said McGovern, whose teen-age niece is affected by one of the diseases covered by the Association.
“MDA has helped improve the life of someone I love, and its research gives my family -– and tens of thousands of other families -- hope for a cure.”
Funds raised through Shamrocks support MDA’s vital
research
and service programs, including
summer camps
and local
clinics.
“Shamrocks Against Dystrophy provides a lighthearted, public way to support MDA’s worldwide research and its nationwide service program, including 235 clinics
and 90 summer camps,” MDA President & CEO Robert Ross said.
Just out of interest, and worthy though this cause must be, why is it that all your topics are invariably about diseases?
ALD girl would you care to discuss the Ebola virus, or the plague, I have a strong interest in viruses or anything resembling them...
My friend Kerri, has spinal muscular atrophy, one of the diseases in the MDA'S program. If you don't like me putting these things up, don't read it if it pisses you off!
I also recall you had a friend with ALD, do you actively seek these people out? its a coinicidence that your friends seem to be terminally ill.
..after watching a close friend die from complications, caused by ALD I hoped I'd never see have to see a repeat performance....
Ll md is not a disease it's a medical condition. I think the difference ... and I do not have the dictionary to hand to quote the exact definitions, but a disease is something which you are infected with, such as a viral condition .. etc. whereas MD is a genetic condition which you are born with as a baby, it is a very debilitating condition and ultimately leads to death. As for whether AldGirl knos more than one person with more than one medical condition, well this is a very diverse world. Even on this very site there are a number of people who have a range of different disabilities, but just because you, or i, or any one of us might know someone who is deaf, someone who is blind, someone in a wheelchair ... doesn't necessarily mean we go seaking them out. I am sure that AldGirl also knows a considerable number of people who are in good health.
And so endeth the sermon
Just a moment I wasn't having a go at her, merely making an observation. i have to add my disagreement to sugarbaby's over the Goblinian amendment however. The question is that the Goblinian reasoning be accepted, as many of that opinion say content.....and the contrary say not content, "Not content!" the not contents have it.
